What is subscription business law?
Subscription business law is a legal service model where a company provides ongoing business legal advice, contract review, and document drafting for a fixed monthly fee rather than charging by the hour. Clients receive unlimited consultations and access to flat-fee services from a licensed attorney — with no surprise invoices and no minimum retainer. Fitter Law is a Chicago-based, Illinois-licensed subscription business law firm serving startups and SMBs throughout Illinois and across the United States for federal matters such as trademark registration.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Self-Service plan include?
Self-Service ($49/month) includes unlimited legal consultations with an Illinois-licensed attorney — there is no hourly meter running when you call or email. You also get access to an attorney-drafted document library, member rates on the flat-fee service menu (typically 20–25% below standard rates), and email support with a one business-day response guarantee. Self-Service is designed for founders and small business owners who want an attorney they can call without the fear of a $500 invoice showing up afterward.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. All Fitter Law subscription plans (Self-Service, Outside Counsel, and General Counsel) are month-to-month with no minimum commitment and no cancellation fee. You can cancel before your next billing date and your access continues through the end of the paid period. There is no lock-in contract and no setup fee on any plan.
What’s the difference between Self-Service and Outside Counsel?
Self-Service ($49/month) gives you unlimited consultations and access to member rates on the flat-fee service menu — ideal if you mainly need advice and the occasional document. Outside Counsel ($149/month) adds priority response, hands-on contract review and drafting, NDA and MSA packages, and offer letters included within the monthly fee. If your business regularly uses more than one or two flat-fee services per month, Outside Counsel typically pays for itself.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Yes. You can upgrade at any time and access to the new plan begins immediately, prorated for the remainder of the billing period. Downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle. There is no penalty for changing plans.
What is the Startup Counsel — PE/VC Track plan?
Startup Counsel — PE/VC Track is a specialized engagement for venture-backed startups preparing for a seed round through Series A. It includes everything in General Counsel plus a pre-fundraising legal readiness assessment, SAFE and convertible note documentation, cap table and corporate governance setup, and investor document review. The initial engagement fee is $2,500; ongoing support until funding closes is $199/month. Because it’s designed for companies that are pre-revenue or pre-funding, the remaining fees are deferred to your funding close — you don’t pay the remainder until you raise.
How does the deferred payment work for Startup Counsel?
After the $2,500 Startup Counsel engagement fee and monthly $199 fee, the remaining legal fees are deferred until your funding round closes — meaning Fitter Law begins work immediately but invoices at close. If the round does not close, the fee arrangement is discussed case by case. This model is designed to align Fitter Law’s incentives with yours: we succeed when you succeed. Contact us to discuss your specific timeline and situation before engaging.
Is Fitter Law licensed in my state?
Fitter Law is licensed in Illinois and is best suited to serve Illinois-based businesses or companies with an Illinois operating presence. For federal matters — including USPTO trademark registration and federal contract review — Fitter Law serves clients across the United States. If your business is based entirely outside Illinois and needs state-specific advice, we’ll tell you so and refer you to appropriate local counsel rather than proceed outside our licensed jurisdiction.
What legal services are not included in a subscription?
Fitter Law does not handle litigation, courtroom representation, family law, criminal defense, tax advice, complex securities filings, or highly specialized regulatory work outside of business law. For those matters, we’ll help you identify and vet appropriate outside counsel. Within the subscription, government filing fees (such as USPTO trademark fees or state formation fees) are billed separately at cost and are not included in the monthly fee.
